To go along with the previous post, now that REACH is a non-profit, we are signed up with Amazon Smile. If you use the link smile.amazon.com to access Amazon, a portion of your purchases can go to the charity of your choice. To select REACH as your charity, sign in to smile.amazon.com on your desktop or mobile phone browser and simply select “Change your Charity” in “Your Account.” "Reach Homeschool Group" will show up when you search for it.
It's official. REACH Homeschool Group is a non-profit organization (or a 501c3, to be specific). We started the process of applying for non-profit status almost a year ago and officially became a non-profit in late 2016.
You might ask, "How does this change affect me?"
You will likely not notice any changes. It opens up opportunities for fundraising for REACH in the future. And REACH uses it's money just as it always has, for space rental, insurance, set, props, light and sound equipment, scripts, and supplies.
The current Board of Directors members are: Nora-Lee L., Lauree B., Robin L., Kim K., and Joe R.. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Auditions for Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book are Wednesday, January 11th from 12:00-4:30pm. The performance dates are May 4th, 5th, and 6th. Please see the REACH Web site calendar for more dates and information.
Auditions are only open to previous REACH Drama members. For those wondering if they are eligible for auditions, please see here for more information:
Just a few announcements related to the upcoming production. We are excited to be doing Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book starting in January. However, we wanted to clarify, this is not the Disney version. We will be incorporating the Rikki Tikki Tavi story into the play as well.
Auditions will be Wednesday, January 11th from 12:00-4:30pm. The performance dates are May 4th, 5th, and 6th. Please see the REACH Web site calendar for more dates and information.http://reachhomeschool.weebly.com/
If you are a REACH family, and you have already made a decision not to participate in the next play, please let Nora-Lee know. It helps us know ahead of time approximately how many roles will be needed in the production.
Also, some parents and actors were wondering if face paint is a necessity for the Jungle Book play. As REACH has done with past plays, we will use an array of face paint, masks, and other costuming to transform the actors into animals. Face paint is not mandatory, but is an option for those that want it.
To our REACH families, past and present, we wanted to clarify the restriction we have placed on acting for the coming semester. Due to the overwhelming success of the REACH Drama program, we are not accepting any new families to acting starting Jan 2017. However, we recognize that families that may have participated in past plays might decide that participating in every play isn't for them. We don't want to punish our families for taking a break and doing what their kids and family need at the time. With this in mind, we wanted to clarify the policy: if you have ever been a dues paying REACH Drama (acting or tech) family in the past, up through Fall 2016, you are always welcome to return.
To the new families interested in the Drama program, we will accept new families to Tech Crew only. We strongly encourage kids that have an interest in theater to try out the Tech Crew. New families will stay on Tech Crew only until the limit on acting families is lifted. The restriction is only being place on REACH Drama acting. New families are always welcome to attend classes, activities, open gyms, and park days.
We are excited to announce that the selection for next semester's REACH Drama play has been made. We will be performing Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.
This current semester, REACH Drama has had it's largest cast ever at more than 80 actors. We are both humbled and overwhelmed at this amazing turn out for the Drama program. Due to this success, we have reached our capacity. We will not be accepting any new families to REACH Drama for acting for the spring semester. We will accept new families to Tech Crew only. New families will stay on Tech Crew only until the limit on acting families is lifted. The restriction is only being place on REACH Drama acting. New families are always welcome to attend classes, activities, open gyms, and park days. Please let us know if you have any questions regarding this restriction or the coming semester. Thank you!

It's official! REACH has found a new location for the fall. We are moving to Zion Church at 3668 Livernois Rd, Troy. About three miles south of the United Methodist location. The space is bigger, with rooms to suit our growing community of families.
The meeting day is changing to Wednesday from 12:00 to 4:30, with extra rehearsals on Thursday.
Hope you see you there!
REACH dances are back! This event is for kids to get together, dance and have fun. We will have a prepared playlist so if you have any requests please contact REACH.
A snack to share would be welcome.
Please note: This is for all ages. Parents are welcome to stay and visit or join in on the fun. Those 12 and over can be dropped off if needed. We will require that contact info for the parents be left at the church. Those under 12 must have a parent or guardian stay at the church.
Let us know if you are attending so we can plan accordingly.
The more the merrier! Feel free to share.
We will be creating care packages for the homeless and impoverished of Detroit. Please start collecting items. Even if you will not be there to assemble the packages with us, you can donate items! Bring them to Karen Truscott and I any time between now and September 24th. I will update with ideas for the packages, but to start out is this picture. The main recipients of the packages are men (mostly veterans), women, and children of Detroit.
In addition to the list below and any other items you feel someone might enjoy, we need shoe boxes for packing the care packages in.
Care Package idea list. All items need to fit in a shoe box. These are not hygiene boxes alone. What is really needed are items like these.
- candy bars
- individually wrapped snacks
- deck of cards
- games for small children
-small pads of paper or small coloring books
- lip balm
- bandaids/first aid items
-feminine hygiene products
-really anything else. The man suggested thinking of things you might sent to military over seas. We can personalize the packages as much as we want. Ask your kids what they want to include. Think of these as little gift boxes. What would brighten your day?
The gentleman I spoke with recommended not adding bottled water because the packages might be delivered in cold months and the water would just be frozen anyways.
We will also be creating cards and pictures or personal notes to add to each care package.
I am excited to announce our schedule for the year and a short description of each of our projects!

Here's the plan for REACH 4-H for the 2015/16:
4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. 4-H youth programs are available for children and youth ages 5-19 through community-based clubs, youth centers, school enrichment programs and special events. Using the experiential learning model, kids participate in fun, hands-on activities that include time for sharing and processing the information learned. 4-H can help young people to do better in school, learn to help others, feel more capable and be responsible. Whether helping kids explore future careers, increasing their science and technology literacy or preventing them from making negative choices that put them at risk, 4-H Youth Development is dedicated to connecting young people to positive futures.https://www.oakgov.com/…/program_…/youth_development/4h.aspx
In addition to the club experience, there are many other resources available to youth. Examples include:
• 4-H Exploration Days, an annual youth conference featuring 200 fun, action-filled classroom and field trip sessions on the Michigan State University campus
• 4-H Capitol Experience, an annual 4-day conference that focuses on civic engagement and public policy. Teens have the opportunity to interact with legislators and learn how policy is made and how they can influence policy issues.
• International exchange opportunities to countries such as Japan, Belize and Poland.
• Scholarship opportunities.
Welcome to the REACH 4-H Club.
We are a club that is for homeschool youth of all ages. Our purpose this year will be to try new things and work on projects each month that can be entered in to the Oakland County Fair in July. This is just a fraction of the many options of what you can enter in fair. If you participate every month, you will have at least 9 projects for fair…possibly even more! This year the Oakland County Fair will be July 8th – 17th. Judging day for most projects will be Saturday, July 9th. We will have a display of pictures of Fair projects each month to give you ideas and we will have Fairbook descriptions for each project we work on. In late spring we will take time to talk about how to enter in Fair and will help anyone who is interested in participating. Please stay tuned for the community service aspect of 4-H as we plan monthly community service projects on the 3rd Thursday of each month.
The cost to join 4-H is $10 a year with a $30 family maximum. Each month will have a fee depending on the project we are working on.
We will meet the first Thursday of most months from 2:45-4:15. Here is our plan for the year. This may change but we have to start somewhere!
Thursday, October 1st.
Intro to 4—H, registration forms and our first project.
We will talk about the Exhibit Hall at Fair and all the different kinds of projects that can be entered.
We will be doing stenciling and stamping. We’ll provide lots to get you started but feel free to bring your own supplies. Stencilling can be on paper, wood, fabric, glass….We’ll be able to finish a couple of projects and start our collection of Fair projects! All ages.
We will have supplies for a variety of Holiday Crafts. Any holiday you want. Ornaments, wreaths, centerpieces, etc. Feel free to bring your own supplies if you have a holiday craft in mind we will also include gift wrapping ideas because gift wrapping is a category at Fair!
January (off site, date to be determined)
We will go to a studio where we can paint our own pottery. Details will be arranged. This will have an additional fee.
All exhibits must be over 50% recycled items. Exhibitor must attach a before photo of exhibit
Material. We’ll have some supplies, but be saving supplies to bring. Check out our pictures for more ideas. This is a fun area!
Jewelry Making and Tin punch
We will provide some supplies; feel free to bring your own. All experience levels can participate. We will also talk about how to prepare jewelry items for fair. Tin punch is part of Folk Art and is an exhibit demonstrating old fashioned methods of construction used. We will have time to do one small project of each or you can do a larger one at club and take another home to finish.
Repurposed Clothing and Hobbies/collectibles
To take a garment item or items and changing the style and function of the garment into something new and different. Include photo of item(s) before alterations. Turn an old pair of jeans into a purse, turn a fancy dress into a skirt, turn dad’s t-shirt into a dress….the possibilities are endless. We will turn an ordinary t-shirt into a fancy shirt. Bring a t-shirt. Hobbies/collectibles include collections of any kind and include legos. If you have a collection you want to share, bring it along. Bring some legos and build a creation for fair. You can also do a kit. There are categories for each. We will talk about entering these kinds of projects and give you ideas for others to do at home.
May (Date and location to be decided)
So many options for photography. We will meet at a park and do a photo shoot. The photography superintendent (our own Kate Morris-Kotowski) will share some photography tips and talk about what the judges are looking for as well as just taking pictures together.
Late May/Early June (Date and location to be decided)
Performing Arts and Fair Registration
We’ll meet somewhere and have a talent show and talk about performing arts entries. Do you sing? Dance? Want to do a monologue or get a group together and perform something? This is your chance. And all of this can be done at fair. We will also help with Fair registration.
Orientation for REACH activities will be Thursday, August 20th from 12:00-2:30. This is your chance to come and check us out and see if this is a good fit for your family. Forms are available on our website and will also be available at the orientation and auditions. If you can print out the forms and have them filled out and ready, this will save time and make the meeting go smoothly. No worries if you can’t. Here is the website:http://reachhomeschool.weebly.com/
If you cannot attend orientation but are interested in joining in on the fun, just let us know. We can make it work.
Our fall play will be Greek Mythology.

(Except where noted, please see the schedule on the website). Large and some medium roles may have an additional rehearsal on Wednesdays morning or afternoon (one or the other, not both). Additional rehearsals will be scheduled and known in advance as much as possible. Not every large/medium actor role will be called every Wednesday. In additional to acting, there are other ways to be involved. We have opportunities for all kinds of behind the scenes involvement for any kids who want (including actors). This could be set building, props, costuming, music, lighting, etc.
Tech week is the week of the performance and will have extra rehearsals or set builds every day. Tech week is mandatory. If you can’t commit to tech week, this might not be the play for you.

Classes have ranged from a one week class to a series. We have lots of kids looking for cooking classes again so we are looking for people to take on a week and teach us something yummy. If you are willing to teach a cooking class, we will set up the schedule. Students typically do pay for supplies.
We are discussing monthly fieldtrips. Details will come soon, just wanted you all to know it’s in the works. If you have a fieldtrip you would like to arrange, please let us know. This will be a group effort and we will plan them based on who is willing to organize them.
We have monthly dances on the calendar. Details will be posted each month. Themes may or may not be arranged. Dances cost $5 per child per dance. Snacks are provided by those attending. If you are interested in being a part of the dances, let us know.
Is there something you would like to see REACH doing but isn’t here? Are you willing to at least help organize it? Let us know!!
